Memorias de lingüistas estadounidenses: First Person Singular

Abstract

El artículo trata de los relatos autobiográficos de lingüistas estadounidenses sobre su vida profesional. Considera las aportaciones de los editores Thomas A. Sebeok (1966), Boyd H. Davis y Raymond K. O'Cain (1980) y E. F. Konrad Koerner (1991, 1998). Forman un amplio repertorio de 90 escritos biográficos (Sebeok) y de 43 autobiografías (Davis, O'Cain y Koerner). La lingüística estadounidense tiene un carácter pionero en éste ámbito y muestra en sus relatos el extraordinario dinamismo de sus autores. El artículo considera la autobiografía como una fuente documental de la corriente narrativa de la historiografía, que permite estudiar la trayectoria vital de los autores y trazar el panorama de la lingüística contemporánea. Entre otros lingüistas, el artículo comenta la figura de Dwight Bolinger como un epítome multifacético y brillante de la lingüística concebida en primera persona del plural. Las voces de estos lingüistas buscan con relatos el sentido de sus vidas y desmienten la fugacidad de la memoria colectiva. [Abstract] The article deals with the autobiographical accounts of American linguists on their professional lives. Consider the contributions of the publishers Thomas A. Sebeok (1966), Davis and Raymond H. Boyd K. O'Cain (1980) and E. F Konrad Koerner (1991, 1998). They form a vast repertoire of 90 biographical writings (Sebeok) and 43 autobiographies (Davis, O'Cain and Koerner). Linguistics in USA has a pioneering nature in this area and shows in its accounts the extraordinary dynamism of the authors. The article considers the autobiography as a documentary source of the narrative historiography trend, which allows to study the trajectory of the authors and chart the landscape of contemporary linguistics. Among other linguists, the paper chooses and analyzes the figure of Dwight Bolinger as a multifaceted and brilliant example of American linguistics, thought in the first person plural. The voices of those linguists inquire with stories about the meaning of their lives and face the transience of collective memory.
