Capital, treball i Estat entre dues revolucions industrials, 1874-1913

Abstract

[cat] L'article revisa les interpretacions sobre les grans fases del procés d'industrialització català i espanyol del vuit-cents i intenta explicar les causes de la desacceleració del creixement industrial en el moment que l'Europa occidental començava a experimentar la segona revolució tecnològica, el període de 1874-1913. Analitza les pautes de desenvolupament factibles a les tres Espanyes que es dibuixaven a escala territorial ja abans de la Gran Guerra. Presenta algunes de les estratègies que empresaris, treballadors i govern posaren en marxa per adaptar-se a la nova conjuntura. Conclou que les iniciatives van ésser clarament insuficients en els àmbits d'infraestructures i educació tècnica, on calia fer un esforç major per aprofitar les noves oportunitats de desenvolupament obertes per la segona revolució industrial.

[eng] The artiele reviews the various interpretations of the main phases of nineteenth century Catalan and Spanish industrialization and tries to explain the causes of the slowing down of industrial growth between 1874 and 1913, a period when Western Europe began to experience a second industrial revolution. It analyses the possible development patterns of the threedifferent Spanish regions which where beginning to emerge already befare the Great War. It also outlines sorne of the strategies adopted by entrepreneurs, workers and the government to adapt to the new situation. The artiele concludes that the initiatives taken were clearly inadequate in thye areas of infrastructure and technological education, where a larger effort was needed to take better advantage of the new possibilities of development associated with the second industrial revolution.
