Abstract:
|
In many nuclear waste disposal concepts bentonite is used as a buffer material forming the near-field around the HLW canisters and the sealing material for the backfilled repository structures. The safety functions of the bentonite-based components of the engineered barrier system (EBS), namely confinement and attenuation of the radioactive waste, can be expressed by so-called safety function indicators such as low hydraulic conductivity, chemical retention of radionuclides, sufficient density and swelling capacity of the bentonite (e.g.; Leupin et al. 2014). The migration of a free gas phase through the saturated bentonite may impair the safety functions of the EBS and violate the corresponding performance measures that have to be fulfilled by the associated safety assessment (SA) of the repository. |
