Abstract

During the Second Republic, Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (Republican Left of Catalonia) was the dominant party in the country. This party was the result of a long process that began at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when the Catalan republicanism was reorganized to become the political left. The process culminated in 1931 would not have without the existence of a number of centers, casinos or clubs that Republicans have been articulating and disarticulating several attempts to dispute the ground right Catalan. This article tells the story of one of these centers, the Centre Republicà d'Igualada, who played a leading role in the local political and social life without which neither explain the articulation of Republicanism the county of Anoia.
