Zoos and aquariums are making significant contributions to conservation by acting as mentors in socially relevant formal and informal education, thereby influencing people's attitudes and behaviour towards animals and environments. Education is a central role for all zoos and aquariums. This role includes the possession of a defined education policy and the formulation of a strategic development plan. The educational role consists of the interpretation of living collections to attract, inspire and enable people from all types of backgrounds to act positively in terms of conservation. Zoos offer informal (free-choice) education to their visitors and offer formal education by developing links with schools, colleges and universities (WAZA, 2005).
