Not everyone learns the same: Navigating individual differences in the FL classroom

Abstract

Individual differences in language acquisition arise from complex interactions between genetic factors, environmental input, and personal characteristics, resulting in significant variation in learning speed, proficiency, and style. Key factors influencing both first and second language acquisition include cognitive abilities (memory, aptitude), personality (introversion/extroversion), motivation, age, and affective variables like anxiety, among others. This webinar will explore how these variables manifest in a classroom setting and why a "one-size-fits-all" approach often fails to reach every student. By understanding the unique profile of each learner, educators can better tailor their instruction to foster a more inclusive and effective environment. Ultimately, "navigating" individual differences isn't about creating 30 different lesson plans for 30 different students; it is about building a flexible framework. When teachers acknowledge that variation is the norm rather than the exception, they move from teaching a curriculum to teaching people.
