[eng] In recent years, economist have shown a constantly increasing interest in the ecological analysis of economic processes. In the initial stage attention was focused on the definition of the physical and ecological limits to growth, and on the global evaluation of the model of industrial development. This was followed by an ever increasingly systematic examination of the pattern of flows of energy and products in the economic system. As in all newly founded branches of science, historiographic reviews of its own disciplinary tradition have made an early appearance. One particularly interesting example of such reviews is Martinez Alier's book (L'ecologisme i I'economia, 1984), which is a résumé of his already extensive contribution on the topic. This note is divided in three parts. The first refers to the theoretical context within which the present ecological viewpoint of the economy is situated. This is followed by comments on certain programmatic aspects of Martinez Alier's work. Finally an evaluation is made of this historical investigation of the evolution of energy theory between 1880 and 1940, and its impact on the social sciences.

[cat] En els últims anys els economistes s'han interessat cada cop més per l'anàlisi ecològica dels processos econòmics. Després d'una etapa inicial caracteritzada pel descobriment dels límits físics i ecològics en el creixement i per la critica global del model de desenvolupament industrial, comença una segona etapa basada en una exploració cada cop més sistemàtica dels fluxos d'energia i de materials en el sistema econòmic. Com en tota especialitat científica emergent, les revisions historiogràfiques de la pròpia tradició disciplinaria no s'han fet esperar. En aquest sentit el llibre de Martínez Alier (L'ecologisme i l'economia, 1984), resum de la seva ja amplia dedicació a aquests temes, n'és un exemple particularment interessant. La nota que presentem consta de tres parts. La primera fa referència al context teòric en què es desenvolupa l'actual enfocament ecològic de l'economia. A continuació es comenten alguns aspectes programàtics del treball de Martínez Alier. Finalment es ressenya la seva investigació històrica sobre l'evolució de les idees energètiques entre 1880 i 1940 i l'impacte d'aquestes en les ciències socials.
