Abstract

[eng] This paper documents a design change that took place around 1434 in the construction of the flying buttresses of the Cathedral of Tortosa, which went from being richly ornamented above the chapels to decoratively restrained above the ambulatory. Starting with the physical evidence, the paper considers the possibility that, around the same time, a decision was taken to stop decorating the space between chapels in the cathedral’s double ambulatory with beautiful open tracery, which has no structural function and is only present in the first two bays of the apse.
