dc.description.abstract
In the wake of the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the chances of a peace agreement between the parties to the armed conflict are still very low. However, this does not preclude bringing to the table the issues that should be addressed in a future peace agreement. While transitional justice is often understood as a process that deals with the atrocities nofollow noopener noreferrer occurred in the past, it also includes other types of measures, like the guarantees of non-repetition, to prevent the recurrence of human rights violations in the future. In the past three decades, 105 peace agreements have included transitional justice measures, ranging from amnesty measures, the establishment of a specific court, creation of truth commissions, release of prisoners, special units for missing persons, to reparation measures for victims, and vetting processes. This has been the case of Guatemala, South Sudan or Colombia. Addressing transitional justice issues in a peace agreement is important as it contributes to promoting sustainable peace for societies in transition.
