El neomalthusianisme a l'inici del segle XX

Abstract

[cat] Cap al 1900 hi havia a Europa i a Amèrica un reeixit moviment social internacional que, en contrast amb el pessimisme de Malthus, creia que el creixement de la població podia aturar-se entre les classes empobrides per decisions voluntàries i atorgava a les dones la capacitat de triar el nombre de fills que volien tenir. Aquest moviment neomalthusià no apel·lava a l'Estat a imposar restriccions al creixement poblacional, ans al contrari, es basava en un activisme del tipus bottom-up fonamentat en la llibertat de les dones, la pressió de la població sobre els salaris i l'amenaça al medi i a la subsistència. En aquest article analitzem el sorgiment i les característiques del moviment neomalthusià que durant els primers anys del segle XX s'estengué pel sud d'Europa i l'Amèrica Llatina; veurem les relacions amb altres moviment polítics o ideologies; les variacions segons països i també al llarg del temps; i, per últim, tindrem ocasió de valorar el neomalthusianisme que sorgí a l'Índia.

[eng] Around 1900 there was in Europe and America a successful international social movement, which in contrast with Malthus's pessimism, believed in the curtailment of population growth amongst the impoverished classes through voluntary decisions and in women's ability to choose the number of children they wanted to have. This Neomalthusian movement did not call upon the State to impose restrictions on population growth, but relied rather on a bottom-up type of activism, based on women's freedom, population pressure on wages, and the threat to the environment and to subsistence. The article analyses the emergence of this movement and its expansion through Southern Europe and Latin America in the 1900s, its relations with other political movements and ideologies, and its variations through the various countries and over the years. Lastly, it takes a particular look at the Neomalthusianism which emerged in India.
