La historiografia biográfica de Thomas A. Sebeok en Portraits of linguists

Abstract

El artículo trata de la compilación de biografías que editó Thomas A. Sebeok en 1966: Portraits of Linguists. A Biographical Source Book for the History of Western Linguistics, 1746-1963. Esta obra es pionera en su ámbito y recoge 90 escritos biográficos sobre 72 lingüistas del comparatismo y del estructuralismo. El artículo estudia la influencia en la historiografía narrativa de la lingüística, aquella que se nutre de fuentes biográficas (Sebeok 1966) y autobiográficas (Davis y O'Cain 1980; Koerner 1990, 1998; Swiggers 1997; Brown y Law 2002; Ertler 2007-2015; Timotin y Colceriu 2012; Laborda, Romera y Fernández Planas 2014). El artículo perfila el canon que establece Sebeok. El relato canónico de Sebeok se caracteriza por un corpus tradicional, con aportaciones personales del editor y críticas relevantes de los biógrafos. El corpus está compuesto por autores masculinos que desarrollan su actividad mayoritariamente en Centroeuropa y Estados Unidos. Del conjunto de Portraits of Linguists son objeto de atención en este artículo las biografías de R. Rask, O. Jespersen, K. Verner y L. Spitzer. Esta selección muestra la dificultad y la responsabilidad que asume el historiador al interpretar la tradición de la lingüística Abstract: 'Biographical historiography in Portraits of Linguists by Thomas A. Sebeok'. The article deals with the compilation of biographies published in 1966 by Thomas A. Sebeok: Portraits of Linguists. A Biographical Source Book for the History of Western Linguistics, 1746-1963. This work is a pioneer in its field and includes 90 biographical writings about 72 linguists from the comparativism and structuralism schools. The paper studies the influence in narrative historiography of linguistics, one that draws on biographical sources (Sebeok 1966) and autobiographical sources (Davis and O'Cain 1980; Koerner 1990, 1998; Swiggers 1997; Brown and Law 2002; Ertler 2007- 2015; Timotin and Colceriu 2012; Laborda, Romera and Fernandez Planas 2014). The article outlines the canon established by Sebeok. The canonical account of Sebeok is characterized by a traditional corpus, with personal contributions of the editor and relevant reviews from biographers. The corpus is composed of male authors who work mainly in Central Europe and the United States. The article examines especially the biographies of R. Rask, O. Jespersen, K. and L. Spitzer Verner. This selection shows the difficulty and responsibility assumed by the historian to interpret the tradition of linguistics.
