This thesis explores the potential role of green hydrogen in decarbonizing industries that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy industry. The study focuses on Sweden, a country with abundant renewable energy resources and progressive climate policies, to identify the optimal locations for green hydrogen production. Through comparative analysis, this thesis has compared key factors such as the availability of renewable energy, policy and heavy industry suitability for green hydrogen application. A multi-factor evaluation approach was applied to determine the optimal locations for hydrogen production facilities in Sweden. The evaluation criteria included renewable resources capacity, access to water resources, proximity to hydrogen demand regions and regional economic conditions. The results indicate that Norrbotten presents the most optimal conditions, due to its high renewable energy capacity and strong industrial hydrogen demand. Although the analysis was limited to selected technical and economic indicators, the results contribute to a better understanding of where green hydrogen initiatives can be most effectively scaled, supporting Sweden’s transformation to a more sustainable energy system.
