Abstract

A new approach to synthesize 2D planar antenna arrays with sparseness characteristics is presented. This approach uses a recently introduced technique called Hybrid Sparse Linear Array Synthesis (HSLAS). In order to reduce the number of antenna elements, we propose to use the HSLAS jointly with the concept of Independent Compression Regions (ICR). In this way, our proposal is able to synthesize two-dimensional antenna arrays with sparseness characteristics, in situations where a strong phase compromise is required, for instance, to synthesize shaped-beam antenna patterns. Accordingly, we manage to solve the phase limitations present in other related methods available in the literature
