Estudio sobre la viabilidad de explotaciones mineras en cuerpos extraterrestres

Abstract

Planet Earth provides large amounts of natural resources required to supply the society and industry of today. Some of these resources are transformed to produce needed materials in the aerospace industry. In only 100 years, these resources have been extracted and exploited in a massive way. The environmental and social impact which is generated, as well as some problems related with the possible scarcity in a short-term future, suggest to start looking for solutions. In this way, the progress in the space exploration area is enabling to open new doors to the research of these resources in other solar system’s bodies. The present study has developed a research about the feasibility of exploiting in extraterrestrial bodies, the resources needed to supply the aerospace industry. For this reason, it is necessary to previously know the most used materials in this industry, as well as to study and analyse the exploitation of its resources in our planet. In this way, it is possible to verify the impact generated and its current availability. Finally, some different space bodies have been researched in order to look for those materials, together with the possibility to exploit the resources. Following this objective, it is possible to promote the concern about the environmental and social problems, and increase the interest related with the space science and technology.

El planeta Tierra ofrece grandes cantidades de recursos naturales necesarios para abastecer a la sociedad y a la industria de hoy en día. Algunos de estos recursos se transforman para fabricar materiales imprescindibles para la industria aeroespacial. En tan solo 100 años, dichos recursos han sido extraídos y explotados de forma masiva. El enorme impacto medioambiental y social que esto conlleva, junto con la problemática derivada de la escasez de los recursos en un futuro no muy lejano, sugiere empezar a buscar soluciones. Así pues, los avances en el ámbito de la exploración espacial están abriendo las puertas hacia la búsqueda de estos recursos en otros cuerpos del sistema solar. En el presente trabajo se desarrolla una investigación sobre la viabilidad de explotar, en cuerpos extraterrestres, recursos necesarios para la industria aeroespacial. Para ello, es necesario previamente conocer los materiales más utilizados en esta industria, así como estudiar y analizar la explotación de sus recursos en nuestro planeta. De esta manera se puede comprobar el impacto que se genera y su disponibilidad actual. Por último, se estudian distintos cuerpos del espacio en busca de dichos materiales, así como la posibilidad para explotar sus recursos. Con este objetivo se puede promover la concienciación sobre la problemática ambiental y social del planeta, así como aumentar el interés hacia la ciencia y tecnología espacial.
