Abstract

This chapter focuses on the relationship between mo-ther and daughters, particularly in relation to the lear-ning processes in the ancient Greek household. This paper uses evidence from funeral epitaphs and epi-grams to show the central importance of textile ma-nufacture in quotidian live- something conventionally connected with the stereotype of the ideal woman. A number of literary and iconographic representations show that the knowledge of this type of work, as with other maintenance activities, was transmitted from mother to daughter. The author argues that this type of educational or learning process formed an essen-tial part of the socialization process of girls in ancient Greece.
