The essay analyses the forms and figures of Motion as a theme, as a structural motive and as a rhetoric matter (through its metaphors, allegories and theoretical meanings) in the three Books of Dante’s Divina Commedia, with special attention to the Dantean treatment of the choreutic aspects of it in the different domains of material “ball” (more inherent to the dynamic landscape of Hell), of physical “toil” or “labour” (in the penitential scheme of the Purgatory) and of incorporeal “Dance” (on the metaphysical backdrop of Paradise). The aim of the study is to suggest some tools for the possible study of a metaphoric and figurative archaeology of dance in the literature of the late Middle Ages
