The discovery of groups of statuettes of female players in the sacred areas dedicated to the female deities in South Italy and Sicily seems related to the female festivals and to the performance of music and dance during the wedding rites. The terracottas suggest the importance of particular musical instruments and of the dance for the rites of passage of the girls from the status of παρθένος to that of γυνή
