Història d’un dolium a l’insula 30 de la ciutat romana d’Empúries

Abstract

L’insula 30 d’Empúries es el darrer projecte de recerca que s’ha dut a terme a la ciutat romana. Aquesta illa de cases es troba en l’espai que hi ha entre les cases romanes núm. 1 i 2 i el fòrum de la ciutat. La seva excavació ha proporcionat la troballa d’unes termes publiques, que ocupen la part nord de l’illa, mentre que la meitat sud es ocupada per locals comercials.

L’àmbit 19 es un local comercial que s’ha excavat fins a la roca natural i mostra una seqüencia que va des de l’establiment d’una estructura campamental de caràcter militar al turo fins a l’abandonament de la ciutat. Amb la fundació de la ciutat romana, aquest espai fou ocupat per una domus d’atri, i en una àrea de servei es va col·locar un dolium per a funcions domestiques. L’abandonament de la casa, però, no va suposar pas la fi de la utilitat del dolium, sinó que fou reutilitzat en fases posteriors, com la gran reforma d’època d’August. En aquest moment podria haver estat aprofitat per a una fullonica, fins que fou amortitzat, moment que podem situar en època flàvia gracies a un petit conjunt arqueològic que es va trobar a l’interior.

The insula 30 of Empuries is the last research project carried out in the Roman city. That insula is located between the Roman houses no. 1 and 2 and the city forum. Its excavation has provided the discovery of a public bath, which occupied the northern part of the insula, while the southern half was occupied by commercial premises.

Area 19 is a commercial premise excavated to the natural rock and shows a sequence dated from the building of a military camp structure on the hill to the abandonment of the city. When the Roman city was founded, this space was occupied by an atrium’s house and a dolium was placed in a service area for domestic purposes. However, the abandonment of the domus did not mean the end of the dolium’s usefulness, since it was reused in later phases, such as in the great reform dated to the Augustan period. At the time, it might have been used like a fullonica, until it was amortized in the Flavian period, based on a small pottery assemblage found inside.
