An anonymousoilpainting(The Comedians)with several and relevant Picassian features has been investigated in a global manner includingIRreflectometric analysis, non destructive pigment analysis with Raman spectroscopy, precise photographicobservations and several comparative studies regarding its artistic and stylistic characteristics. The identified pigments (zinc white, ocher earth, vermillion, ultramarine blue and charcoal) are in good agreement with thoseusuallyusedby Picassobetween the latest decade of 19thcentury and the first of twentieth. Moreover, a comparative analysis of the artistic style has shownsimilar artistic qualitiesbetween the artworkinvestigated and some Picasso’s paintings of the RosePeriod. With all the obtained results, it has been possible to conclude that The Comedianscould be, perhaps, afinal version of Comedian and Child, a pastel painted by Picasso in 1905 andpreserved inthe National Museum of Art of Osaka. |
