Predicting citril finch Carduelis citrinella response to climatic change: an analysis of survival and recruitment probabilities in relation to meteorological covariates

Borràs, Antoni; Conroy, Mike; Cabrera, Josep; Cabrera, Toni; Cabot, Josep; Senar, Juan Carlos (2025-10-06)

Understanding the impact of climate change on species’ demography is essential for assessing their vulnerability to environmental shifts. We analysed a dataset of 6,967 citril finches Carduelis citrinella captured at a ...

Variable social organization and breeding system of a social parrot revealed by genetic analysis

Dawson Pell, Francesca S. E.; Senar, Juan Carlos; Ortega-Segalerva, Alba; Burke, Terry; Hatchwell, Ben J. (2025-09-30)

Social organization and contributions to reproduction vary widely within and between species that breed in groups. Such variation often arises from the process of group formation, which drives patterns of relatedness and ...

Distribution and evolution of the western European water frogs (genus Pelophylax) from Catalonia, northeastern Spain

Burriel-Carranza, Bernat; Molina-Duran, Carolina; Carranza, Salvador (2025-09-22)

European water frogs from the genus Pelophylax are particular among amphibians as they can produce hybrids (named kleptons) reproducing by hybridogenesis. Four klepton species have been described in Europe: Pelophylax ...

Phylogeographic and genomic insights unveil the evolutionary history and post-glacial recolonization routes of the Palmate Newt (Lissotriton helveticus) into Europe

Burriel-Carranza, Bernat; López-Caro, Jhulyana; Carranza, Salvador (2025-09-03)

Quaternary glacial cycles have been key drivers of diversification for Holarctic species, promoting divergence, isolation, and extinction processes in numerous taxa. These cycles facilitated evolutionary radiations in some ...

Continental Patterns of Phenotypic Variation Along Replicated Urban Gradients: A Mega-Analysis

Thompson, M. J.; Senar, Juan Carlos; Charmantier, A. (2025-07-01)

Individual variation among and within natural populations can have eco-evolutionary implications by, for example, affecting species interactions or evolutionary potential. Urban systems present a unique opportunity to ...

Coneguem les serps de Catalunya

Burriel-Carranza, Bernat (2025-06)

De vegades, quan anem d’excursió podem veure alguna serp. Per això cal que sapiguem com hem d’actuar, tant per respectar-les com si, per inadvertència nostra, les molestem i ens mosseguen per defensar-se.

Unveiling the evolutionary history of european vipers and their venoms from a multi-omic approach

Talavera, Adrián; Burriel-Carranza, Bernat; Carranza, Salvador (2025-06-26)

Snake genomes attract significant attention from multiple disciplines, including medicine, drug bioprospection, and evolutionary biology. However, genomic research within the Viperidae family has mostly focused on the ...

Chromosome-level reference genome for the medically important Arabian horned viper (Cerastes gasperettii)

Mochales-Riaño, Gabriel; Burriel-Carranza, Bernat; Carranza, Salvador (2025-06-06)

Venoms have traditionally been studied from a proteomic and/or transcriptomic perspective, often overlooking the true genetic com- plexity underlying venom production. The recent surge in genome-based venom resear c h ...

The effect of social structure on vocal flexibility in monk parakeets

Smeele, Simeon Q.; Senar, Juan Carlos; Aplin, Lucy M. (2025-05-07)

The social complexity hypothesis argues that communicative complexity arises as a result of social complexity, with this occurring through mechanisms including plasticity and selection. Most research to date has focused ...

Evolution of the preformative molt in Cardinalidae correlates with transitions from forest to open habitats

Guallar, Santi; Rueda-Hernández, Rafael; Pyle, Peter (2021-01-30)

We explored adaptive factors affecting the preformative molt in the passerine family Cardinalidae, and concluded that the ancestor inhabited forest habitats and underwent a partial preformative molt that included wing ...

Moult and age determination criteria of the monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus)

Guallar, Santi; Manzanilla, A.; Senar, Juan Carlos (2025-02-27)

Age determination of the invasive monk parakeet Myiopsitta monachus has been hampered by its juvenile plumage showing only subtle differences from subsequent plumages, and little is known about its moult. Here we examined ...

Cryptic speciation in arid mountains: an integrative revision of the Pristurus rupestris species complex (Squamata, Sphaerodactylidae) from Arabia based on morphological, genetic and genomic data, with the description of four new species

Burriel-Carranza, Bernat; Koppetsch, Thore; Carranza, Salvador (2025-02-24)

In the arid landscapes of the Arabian Peninsula, high levels of cryptic diversity among reptiles, and especially in geckos, have recently been revealed. Mountain ranges within the peninsula were shown to contain the ...

Continent-wide drivers of spatial synchrony in breeding demographic structure across wild great tit populations

Woodman, Joe P.; Senar, Juan Carlos; Sheldon, Ben C. (2025-02-18)

Variation in age structure influences population dynamics, yet we have limited understanding of the spatial scale at which its fluctuations are synchronised between populations. Using 32 great tit populations, spanning ...
