Cómic español: ¿un arma desafiante contra los estereotipos de la vejez?

Abstract

Es bien sabido que el concepto de la edad es un constructo cultural (Gullette, 2004). Incluso las diferentes etapas de la vida han sido clasificadas y definidas por la sociedad en la que vivimos. Como otras etiquetas de categorización social, la edad también está sujeta a diversos estereotipos, creados y evaluados por la sociedad. El culto a la juventud aparta del escenario principal a la vejez, lo que contribuye a alimentar su imagen mayoritariamente negativa. Desde la gerontología narrativa, este artículo examina la representación de la vejez en el medio del cómic del ámbito nacional, con el fin de evaluar hasta qué punto y cómo estas obras combaten los estereotipos relacionados con la vejez y de qué manera contribuyen a crear una mejor imagen social de este fenómeno en auge.

It is a well-known fact that the concept of age is a cultural construct (Gullette, 2004). Even the different stages of life have been classified and defined by the society in which we live. Like other social categorization labels, age is also subject to various stereotypes, created and evaluated by society. The cult of youth removes old age from the main stage, which contributes to feeding its mostly negative image. From narrative gerontology, this article examines the representation of old age in the national comic tradition, with the aim of evaluating to what extent and how these works combat stereotypes related to old age and how they contribute to create a better social image of this growing phenomenon.
