El muralismo zapatista: una revuelta estética

Abstract

This article deals with how Zapatismo has aesthetically addressed its political transformation and the aesthetic fruits it has achieved. To this end, the text interprets how the Zapatista identity has been created and re-created through the visual language of the 203 murals found in the territories of the Zapatista Rebel Autonomous Municipalities, and how this identity challenges official Mexican revolutionary imagery and creates a new activist iconography for Zapatista bases and the Zapatista solidarity movement. The work on iconographic creation and restructuring has been theoretically inspired by Geneviève Zubrzycki. The article concludes that the Zapatista murals have common features, the result of an amalgamation of not explicit conceptions of various external and internal subjects that have been confronting the link between art and social transformation in different ways

El trabajo trata cómo el zapatismo ha abordado estéticamente su proyecto político de transformación y a qué frutos estéticos ha llegado. Para ello se realiza una interpretación de cómo se ha creado y recreado la identidad zapatista a través del lenguaje visual de los 203 murales que están en los territorios donde se asientan los Municipios Autónomos Rebeldes Zapatistas, y cómo esta identidad interpela a la imaginería revolucionaria mexicana oficial y crea una nueva iconografía activista para sus bases y para el movimiento de solidaridad. El trabajo se inspira teóricamente en la obra de Geneviève Zubrzycki sobre creación y reestructuración iconográfica, y concluye que el muralismo zapatista tiene rasgos comunes fruto de una amalgama de concepciones no explicitadas de diversos sujetos externos e internos que han ido afrontando de diferentes maneras la vinculación entre arte y transformación social
