Experimental investigation of nanofiltration for the removal of high sulphate concentration from groundwater for drinking water production and assessment of options for the concentrate treatment

Increased concentrations of sulphate in the groundwater near surface mining of brown coal can be a problem for the drinking water quality regarding the consumers and regarding corrosion in the distribution network. The background of the master thesis is a study to investigate the potential of using nanofiltration for the removal of high sulphate amounts from raw water for drinking water production. Experiments with several nanofiltration membranes in lab scale should be perfom analysing the influence of pressure, cross-flow and sulphate concentration on the membrane performance. Furthermore first experiments should be done for the investigation of the concentrate treatment with precipitation/crystallitation with sedimentation or centrifugation as separation method.
