En un context social i religiós com el del món grec antic, en què la castedat masculina no és en absolut un valor, sobta observar que els personatges de la novel·la grega refrenen habitualment les seves passions sexuals, sobretot tenint en compte el caràcter marcadament eròtic d’aquestes obres. A l’hora de cercar un referent narratiu per a aquesta caracterització, el més plausible és que la construcció idealitzada d’aquest rebuig de les passions provingui, en darrera instància, de l’únic espai on rep un ampli desenvolupament en la literatura grega: la biografia de filòsofs. Mirarem, doncs, de resseguir breument el desenvolupament del tòpic de la castedat entre els dos gèneres, biografia i novel·la grega antigues, que obren el camí cap a l’hagiografia posterior, per constatar que, a l’Antiguitat, no sempre omnia uincit amor.

In a social and religious context li ke the ancient Greek world, where the male chastity is not an absolute value, it is surprising to note that the characters in the ancient Greek novel regularly restrain their sexual passions, especially considering the markedly erotic atmosphere of these works. When searching for a narrative referring to this characterization, the most plausible is that the construction of this idealized rejection of passions comes, ultimately, from the only place where there is an ample development in Greek literature: biography of philosophers. We shall, therefore, briefly follow the development of the topic of chastity among both genders, biography and ancient Greek novel, which opens the way for subsequent hagiography, to note that in ancient times, not always omnia uinc it amor.
