The aim of this work is to clarify, as far as possible, the reactions of four Catalan writers, Pere Calders, Avel·lí Artís-Gener (Tísner), Marià Manent and Joan Sales, when war broke out. What commitments did they take on? How did they act? Did they go to the front? Did they choose to fight from the rearguard or did they stay at home as though the whole business had nothing to do with them? Or perhaps they fled abroad? In short, it sets out to ascertain what the stances were of these four Catalan writers during the Spanish Civil War.
