L’evolució de la vil·la romana en el període tardoromà a Catalunya

Abstract

Evolució de la vil·la romana en el període tardoromà a Catalunya, a partir de l’arqueologia, l’estudi del poblament rural i de les fonts antigues. A partir del segle iv es redueix considerablement el nombre de vil·les, per bé que les existents es converteixen en centres de poder importants, amb residències luxoses, que van assumint funcions fiscals, jurídiques i religioses. Això no obstant, el sistema econòmic és molt diferent del de l’Alt Imperi. En el segle v, moltes d’aquestes vil·les riques es ruralitzen i poques són les que queden en el segle vi, moment en què els grans propietaris deixen de residir al camp. La dicotomia entre nucli urbà i territori posa fi al concepte de ciutat de l’antiguitat. Amb tot, les estructures que les ciutats havien imprès al paisatge segueixen persistint durant tot el període visigòtic.

The article is about the evolution of the Roman villa in the late Roman period in Catalonia, based on archaeology, the study of the rural population and ancient sources. From the 4th century onwards, the number of villas decreased considerably, although the existing ones became important centres of power, which assumed fiscal, legal and religious functions, and developed luxurious residences. However, the economic system became very different from that of the High Empire. In the 5th century, many of these wealthy villas were ruralized and few survived in the 6th century, when large landowners ceased to live in the countryside. The dichotomy between urban centre and territory puts an end to the concept of the city of antiquity. However, the structures that the cities had imprinted on the landscape remained throughout the Visigothic period.
