La vil·la romana dels Munts és el resultat d’una complexa successió d’edificacions generades al llarg de vuit segles d’ocupació estable ininterrompuda (segles i aC-VII). En els prop de dos-cents anys d’existència de la vil·la altoimperial dels Munts, el seu període de màxim esplendor i desenvolupament arquitectònic, l’edificació va patir successives transformacions que, unides a les construccions corresponents a edificacions precedents i posteriors, configuren una realitat arquitectònica de complexa interpretació i articulació. Una complexitat, intuïda en les primeres campanyes d’excavació (Sánchez, 1971; Berges, 1970a i b i 1977a i b), que s’ha vist refermada i ampliada en les intervencions arqueològiques posteriors, base sobre la qual es fonamenta aquesta proposta d’evolució de la vil·la (Tarrats et alii, 1998a i b i 2000; Tarrats, Remolà, 2007; Tarrats et alii, 2008).
