The Iberian town of Ullastret (Catalonia): Town planning and urban characteristics

Abstract

Ullastret constitutes a model case for studying the phenomenon of urbanism and the formation of an Iberian town, thanks to the potential and size of the settlement, the diversity of the archaeological investigations and the wide-ranging studies undertaken in recent years. With the aim of revealing the process of urban development, this article analyses the three important phases of this Iberian town, focusing on the evolution of its urban structure. The physical features of the plan, the overall organisation of the town, the diversification of productive activities, the existence of a stratified society ruled by well-consolidated élites and the use of writing, which implies an administrative system, all clearly document its status as a town. The centralised organisation of the territory based on a single particularly large settlement came about very quickly, probably beginning in the 5th century BC, and underwent a spectacular development in the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, as Ullastret quickly consolidated itself as a major power centre on the north-eastern coast of Catalonia

Ullastret representa un cas modèlic d’estudi del fenomen urbà i de la formació d’una ciutat ibèrica en raó del potencial i envergadura de l’establiment, de la varietat de les operacions arqueològiques realitzades, així com de l’amplitud dels estudis portats a terme aquests darrers anys. Per tal de presentar el procés d’urbanització, el treball se centra en l’estructura i l'evolució del nucli urbà, seguint les tres grans fases de formació, d’expansió i de gran desenvolupament de la ciutat ibèrica. La fisonomia de la implantació, l’esquema de l’organització urbana, la diversificació de les activitats productives, l’existència d’una societat estratificada dirigida per unes elits ben consolidades i l’ús de l’escriptura, que implica un sistema d’administració, són elements que documenten plenament la categoria de ciutat d’aquest establiment. El fenomen d’organització centralitzada del territori a partir d’un assentament major que actua com a ciutat és molt ràpid, des de probablement el segle v aC, amb un desenvolupament espectacular els segles iv i iii aC. Per tant, Ullastret es consolida ràpidament com a gran centre de poder al nord-est de la costa catalana
