Domestic storage in a Late Roman insula from Histria (Istros) in Constanta county, Romania

Abstract

During the Late Roman period in Scythia, we may have observed a preponderance of the storage of products in dolia inside the households. This situation is well demonstrated by the discoveries from the Histrian insula – University of Bucharest’s Acropolis Center–South Sector (henceforth ACS). The dolia from this sector are medium and large–sized, with rim dimensions that vary from 50 to 70 cm, and an average capacity of 1000 and 1600 l. They are locally made and could store wine or cereals.

Durante el periodo tardorromano en Scythia, se observa una preponderancia en el almacenamiento de productos en dolia dentro de los espacios domésticos. Esta situación está bien atestiguada por los hallazgos en la ínsula de Historia – Universidad de Bucarest, Sector Acrópolis Center-South (ACS). Los dolia de este sector son de tamaño medio y grande, con dimensiones de borde que varían entre 50 y 70 cm, y una capacidad promedio de entre 1000 y 1600 litros. Son de fabricación local y podían almacenar vino o cereales.
