Reconstructing the question of school choice : towards a geographical agent-based model for Chile

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to reformulate the question of school choice in a voucher system, by moving towards a perspective, assessing competition between schools and the choice of students using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Agent-Based Modeling (ABM). How spatial structure affects competition among schools? How do socio-geographic structuration and social interaction affect this process? We show a preview of the proposed model and main social mechanisms of school choice: Quality, Distance, Cost, Expectations, Homophily and Mimesis for students and their families, and Selection, Supply and Local Competition for schools.
