¿Consumir para consumar?: efectos del alcohol y la cocaína en la satisfacción sexual y la autoestima

Abstract

A lo largo de la historia, el consumo de alcohol y drogas ha estado altamente ligado a la conducta sexual, además de verse relacionado con la autoestima. Sin embargo, las drogas tienen efectos negativos en las relaciones sexuales y en la manifestación de la sexualidad en general. El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar en qué grado la tríada de variables de uso o abuso de cocaína y/o al alcohol, la satisfacción sexual y el nivel de autoestima se encuentran interrelacionadas, juntamente con la diferenciación de género, el tiempo de abstinencia, la cantidad de consumo y el tiempo en tratamiento. Participaron 72 pacientes en tratamiento en el Centro de Atención y Seguimiento Garbivent para el tratamiento de su consumo problemático de alcohol y/o cocaína; de los cuales 24 fueron mujeres y 48 hombres, con edades comprendidas entre 18 y 72 años. Los resultados indican que, aunque los niveles de autoestima y satisfacción sexual estaban por debajo de la media, la relación del consumo de drogas con la satisfacción sexual y la autoestima. Los pacientes señalaron la necesidad de abordar la sexualidad en las terapias para superar el consumo de drogas, preferentemente con un profesional psicólogo.

Throughout history, the use of alcohol and drugs has been highly linked to sexual behavior, and can also be associated to self-esteem, considered to be a predisposition and maintenance factor of the substance use. Nevertheless, drugs have negative effects in sexual relations and sexuality in general. The objective of this study is to evaluate in which degree the variable triad which includes abuse of cocaine and/or alcohol, sexual satisfaction and self-esteem are related, with the distinction between gender, time abstinence, quantity of consumption and therapy period. The investigation was carried out with a total sample of 72 patients from the “Centro de Atención y Seguimiento Garbivent” for their problematic use of alcohol and/or cocaine; from which 24 were women and 48 men, between the ages of 18 and 72. Although the levels of self-esteem and sexual satisfaction were lower than the average, significant results were found, concluding the existence of relation between use of drugs with both variables. The need of approaching this issue was also found significant on behalf of patients, from which 9 out of 10 preferred psychological treatment.
