Introduction: the World Health Organization estimates that 24 million people
worldwide are diagnosed with schizophrenia. This disorder has a multifactorial
etiology, meaning it arises from a combination of genetic, biochemical, and social
factors that affect the person as a whole. Unfortunately, mental health conditions
have been stigmatized and undervalued since their emergence, resulting in this
population being excluded from the level of care they deserve. In addition to this
issue, there is also the need to address the sexual perspective of individuals with
schizophrenia—that is, bridges must be built to offer a holistic approach to users
diagnosed with this disorder, allowing them to enjoy their sexual sphere while
supporting their personal development. Likewise, nursing intervention is one of
the cornerstones in supporting these individuals and providing quality care.
Objectives: the aim of this study is to explore and analyze the perceptions
surrounding sexuality among individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Additionally, it seeks to examine gender-based differences and changes in sexual
needs that may occur following diagnosis.
Materials and Methods: this research will employ a qualitative methodology with
a phenomenological-descriptive approach. The aim is to capture and describe
the subjective experiences of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, aged
between 25 and 50 years, living in the province of Girona, with regard to their
sexuality. Data will be collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews,
designed to elicit detailed narratives from participants. A purposive sampling
method will be applied, and the interviewer will travel to each relevant center to
carry out the interviews. The interview guide will be semi-structured and
developed in collaboration with a research group specializing in mental health.
All interviews will be audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim, with strict
measures in place to ensure the confidentiality and privacy of all participants
