Abstract

A fragmentary relief in white marble, preserved in a private collection, represents with great subtlety the episodes of the d ispute of Saint Catherine, her condemnation and martyrdom, bordered by an unmistakable pattern of heraldry. Probably created in the third quarter of the thirteenth century in Castile, it proves the early creation of commemorative an d d evotional screens, linked to altars and, sometimes, to adjoining tombs. In addition, this relief expressed Alfonso X's filial affection

Un relieve fragmentario en mármol blanco, conservado en una colección privada, representa con extrema sutileza los episodios del debate de santa Catalina, su condena y martirio, bordeados por una heráldica inconfundible. Elaborado muy probablemente en el tercer cuarto del siglo XIII en Castilla, acredita la temprana creación de pantallas visuales, conmemorativas y devocionales, vinculadas a los altares y, a veces, a tumbas inmediatas.
