Las imágenes para John Ruskin: una aproximación = Images under John Ruskin’s gaze: an approach

Abstract

The aim of this article is to propose a vision of the value that John Ruskin attributed to art and images. To this end, more than his facet as an art critic, I will consider his work as an amateur artist and art teacher in order to present the intrinsic values of the works produced by the classic arts (for the purposes of this text: painting and drawing). I will also discuss the value and use that Ruskin attributed to photography, a medium that was a child of the 19th century and was widely discussed as belonging to the arts. In doing this, I will briefly outline some of the pillars of his aesthetic and critical theory, indiscernibly woven into his life goals and his work as a drawing teacher, together with his considerations of photography

El objetivo de este artículo es proponer una visión del valor que el británico John Ruskin otorgaba al arte y a las imágenes. Para ello, además de su faceta de crítico, se considerará la de artista aficionado y profesor de arte, a fin de presentar los valores intrínsecos que presentaban las obras producidas por las artes clásicas (para los propósitos de este texto: pintura y dibujo). Se hablará también del valor y el uso que atribuye a la fotografía, un medio propiamente hijo del siglo xix. Para ello se expondrán brevemente algunos de los pilares de su teoría estética y crítica, indiscerniblemente ligados a sus objetivos vitales, su faceta de profesor de dibujo, y también sus consideraciones sobre la fotografía
