dc.description.abstract
This paper analyzes the global defense trade and investigates the factors that determine the trade of these goods and whether, during times of high geopolitical uncertainty, such as post-2021 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there has been an increase in ”friendshoring” of these goods. We find that cultural and political closeness is more important than geographical vicinity for the trade of arms, dual-use, and nuclear goods compared to overall trade. Further, gravity models and network analysis show an increase in geopolitical fragmentation in recent years and point towards an emphasis on friendshoring during times of geopolitical uncertainty.
