[spa] ¿Podemos convertir Edipo rey de Sófocles en una historia de amor tal como osa hacerlo Berkoff en Greek? Aunque algunos críticos leen Greek sólo como un drama provocador que en modo alguno intenta justificar el incesto, directores, actores y críticos se han dejado cautivar por la impactante historia de amor entre Eddy y su esposa-madre. Quedaría demostrado así que la adaptación de Berkoff, pensada para ilustrar la degradación social de la Gran Bretaña de los 80s, deviene una propuesta arriesgada, puesto que significa negar de hecho la conciencia trágica de los hombres y las mujeres contemporáneos. Sin embargo, si éste es el caso, lectores y espectadores, más allá del indudable placer de asistir a la representación de Greek, pueden preguntarse, incluso desde una perspectiva no fundamentalista de la tradición clásica, si es coherente inspirarse en el texto de Sófocles, precisamente aquél que nos muestra la gran conciencia trágica de los griegos. |

[eng] Can Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex be transformed into a love story, as seen in Steven Berkoff’s Greek? This article is meant to show that, while some critics read Greek simply as a provocative drama that by no means aims to justify incest, directors, actors and critics in the end become enthralled by the powerful love story that ensues between Eddy and his wife and mother. This would demonstrate that Berkoff’s adaptation, meant to illustrate the social degradation of Great Britain in the 1980s, becomes a quite risky proposition, as it implies a flat denial of the tragic awareness of contemporary men and women. However, if this is the case, readers and audience, apart from the undoubted pleasure they take in the performance of Berkoff’s drama, may wonder, even from a non-fundamentalist perspective within the classical tradition, whether it is sensible to take inspiration from Sophocles’ text, which shows precisely the great tragic awareness of the Greeks. |
