This work presents a modeling study previous to a push-pull conservative and reactive tracer test.
This will take place in the coastal aquifer Riera Argentona, Spain. The document aims to identify
the possible problems that may present the tracer test taking into account the special
characteristics of a coastal aquifer.
First, a hydrogeochemically characterization of the aquifer was performed classifying the types of
water and identifying the main chemical reactions present in the interaction of water from the
continent with that seawater intrusion. The chemical processes of interest that were identified
were: cation exchange, dissolution - precipitation of minerals and to smaller degree oxidation of
organic matter.
Then, the modeling that was performed using the codes TRANSIN, TRANSDENS and RETRASO. The
injection of a conservative tracer in a medium of constant density and with matrix diffusion was
modeled. Furthermore, assuming modeled variable density flow, the injection was modeled of
saline water a conservative tracer into an initially fresh medium and vice versa. Subsequently, a
model was realized where the tracer can interact with the aquifer according to the chemical
reactions identified by the hydrogeochemical characterization.
The results of the modeling showed that variable density flow is an important process which
notably considerably diminishes the recovery of tracer and therefore the usefulness of the test,
when the density of the injected water is different from that of the initial water. The matrix
diffusion and chemical reactions have an effect and therefore the test can be used to quantify
these processes. However, to detect and chemical reactions chemical processes, the chemical
composition of the injected water must be sufficient different from that of the initial water. |
