El cáncer es una enfermedad que socialmente se relaciona con dolor, sufrimiento y muerte. Exige importantes recursos y una optimización en la eficacia y eficiencia de las intervenciones ya que implica un elevado nivel de estrés que se manifiesta en forma de ansiedad y/o depresión. El momento del diagnóstico resulta un fuerte impacto emocional para el paciente y su familia ya que cambia la estructura vital de éstos e implica una importante incertidumbre en cuanto al futuro. El proceso que acompaña a comunicar dicho diagnóstico, requiere de mecanismos de reconstitución psíquica que permitan generar una respuesta a los retos que crea este padecimiento. Para que esto ocurra se requieren unos mecanismos adaptativos llamados estrategias de afrontamiento que permitan la capacidad estabilizadora ante una situación de estrés. Objetivos: El objetivo de este estudio es conocer las distintas estrategias de afrontamiento que presenta el paciente oncológico y explorar qué efectos tienen en la calidad de vida de estos pacientes. Metodología: Revisión de la literatura. Tras aplicar los criterios de inclusión y exclusión, 25 publicaciones científicas de las bases de datos de PubMed y de la UIC, fueron clasificadas para el estudio de este trabajo. Resultados: Existen varias definiciones de distintos autores de estrategias de afrontamiento. En general se pueden agrupar en dos grandes grupos: estrategias de afrontamiento activas o positivas y estrategias de afrontamiento pasivas o negativas. Las distintas estrategias de afrontamiento adoptadas por los pacientes oncológicos influyen y tienen una relación directa con la calidad de vida de estos pacientes. El afrontamiento activo o positivo se relaciona positivamente con una mejor calidad de vida y el afrontamiento negativo o pasivo se relaciona con una peor calidad de vida. Existen distintas variables que influyen en la elección de las distintas estrategias de afrontamiento. Conclusiones: Hacer frente al cáncer es una de las tareas más difíciles que se encuentra el paciente oncológico durante el proceso de la enfermedad. Los diversos recursos de afrontamiento dependen del grado de amenaza que supone la enfermedad para el paciente y los recursos que tiene para enfrentarse a ella. Cancer is a disease that socially is associated with pain, suffering and death. The time of diagnosis results in a strong emotional impact on the patient and their family as it changes its vital structure of and involves significant uncertainty about the future. The process that accompanies communicating the diagnosis requires psychic reconstitution mechanisms that can generate a response to the challenges that this condition creates. For this to happen, some adaptive mechanisms called coping strategies that allow stabilizing capacity in a situation of stress are required. Aim: The aim of this study is to understand the different coping strategies presented by oncologic patients and explores what effects it has on the quality of life of these patients. Methodology: Literature review. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 25 scientific publications from different database were classified for the study of this work. Results: There are several definitions of different authors of coping strategies. In general it can be grouped into two mains groups: active or positive coping strategies and passive or negative coping strategies. The different coping strategies adopted by oncologic patients influence and have a direct relation to the quality of life of these patients. Distinctive variables exist that influence the choice of distinct coping strategies. Active or positive coping is positively related to a better quality of life and negative or passive coping is related to a poorer quality of life. Conclusions: Coping with cancer is one of the most challenging tasks that oncologic patients will find during disease. The various coping resources depend on the degree of threat posed by disease on the patient and the resources they have to deal with it. Keywords: cancer, coping, quality of life.
