Results of a study oriented to characterize and to determine the variability of the properties of the reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and hot recycled asphalt mixtures with high rates of RAP in their composition are presented. Three projects carried out in different Spanish provinces between the years 2004 and 2007 were selected, which ones used recycled mixtures with RAP rates between 40 and 60 %. On each RAP, variability in the storings around the asphalt content and the particle
size distribution was evaluated, whereas in
the recycled mixtures the same variables
were analyzed together with the volumetric
and mechanical properties obtained from Marshall’s tests applied to control the mixtures. In general, the results obtained indicate a high variability in the particle size distribution and asphalt content in the mixtures with high contents of RAP with respect to the conventional mixtures, and also the results obtained indicate that the homogenizing techniques used for the RAP and the division of RAP, previous to its use, allow to reduce considerably the variability in the particle size distribution and in the asphalt content of the recycled mixtures at high rates, and simultaneously, to register variability of its volumetric and mechanical properties similar to the conventional mixtures. |
