In the 16th century several religious orders attempted to enter in China and consolidate
a permanent Catholic mission there. This work focuses on the scenario
of rivalry, but also cooperation, that was generated in the failed process of Christianization
of the Celestial Empire, with attention to the mendicant religious provinces
of Castilian origin, as well as their complex relationship with the Jesuits, as a
short state of the art and presentation of the type of sources that allow us to reconstruct
an authentic «race» for evangelization that was fought between the 16th and
17th centuries, with China, the Philippines, Lisbon, Madrid and Rome as scenes
of competition and convergence of missionary interests.</mods:abstract>
