Antes la restauración tenía dos vertientes igual de importantes: la restauración de la parte material de la obra y, no menos importante, la restauración de la parte estética. Las intervenciones tenían que asemejarse lo más posible al original. Actualmente estos criterios son obsoletos. Las intervenciones de restauración tienen que ser totalmente identificables para distinguirlas de la parte original y no llevar a engaño al estudioso para respetar la singularidad de cada una de sus partes. Aunque es cierto que se procura conservar todas las partes de la obra, el criterio de la conservación-restauración se basa en facilitar la funcionalidad del libro. Una de las premisas más importantes del CRAI de la Universidad de Barcelona es la de facilitar la consulta a investigadores y estudiosos, por lo que se ha de procurar una funcionalidad total sin poner en riesgo la integridad física del ejemplar a la vez que procurar conservar todos los elementos de la arquitectura original del ejemplar.
