<dcterms:abstract>This final degree project focuses on the design and prototype development of Arliths, a
tactical rogue-like video game that incorporates deck-building and board game
mechanics. The project originated from the desire to create a digital interpretation of a
fantasy-world board game, inspired by minigames such as Skystones (Skylanders:
Giants) and Tetra Master (Final Fantasy IX). These early inspirations served as a
foundation for developing original mechanics that emphasize unit placement, strategic
combat, and player progression.
The main goal of the project was to integrate three core mechanics—rogue-like
structure, deck-building progression, and tactical grid-based combat—into a cohesive
and engaging gameplay experience. The project began with extensive research into
these genres and their defining mechanics, followed by the creation of a detailed Game
Design Document (GDD) and a vertical slice prototype developed in Unity 3D.
The methodology followed an iterative approach divided into preproduction,
production, and postproduction phases. Preproduction involved conceptual research
and GDD creation. Production focused on the implementation of core mechanics,
procedural content, and basic AI. Postproduction included user testing and validation
sessions with diverse players. Feedback was collected through surveys and analytics
tools to improve gameplay balance and usability.
The final result is a unique, polished prototype that has received highly positive
feedback during the validation process. Playtesters praised the originality of the
mechanics, the immersive presentation, and the strategic depth. The conclusions
highlight the project’s success in exceeding initial objectives, while also acknowledging
areas for improvement such as AI variety and communication planning with artists.
Future development lines include expanding the game with a world championship
tournament, AI enhancements, unique NPC models, and additional gameplay systems.
Overall, the project showcases a strong foundation for potential commercial
development and is a product to take great pride in</dcterms:abstract>
