<dc:description>Textile industrial process have been increasing along the population’s growth. Water is used as a
primary resource in the manufacturing process, being involved in the wet processing stages. The
amount of water that goes into the process is considerably high and as a result wastewater is produced.
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are responsible for purifying the effluent generated by this
industrial sector. Taking this into account, this project aim to analyze qualitative and quantitative a
cotton textile company that produces 600 m3 of wastewater and 127.743 kg of dry sludge daily. The
effluent treated is dispersed in water bodies and the sludge generated is sent to the landfills. A more
sustainable choice of management is proposed for both the treated effluent and the sludge based on
the Waste Hierarchy Principle (WHP) imposed by European legislation. The effluent generated from
the wastewater treatment plant met the discharge standards, however an additional treatment of
disinfection is required for the reuse of this water within the cotton wet processing steps. The study
conclude the most feasible sludge management, according to the sludge composition, where it is
categorized under material recovery (dewatering, landspreading and composting), energy recovery(
thermal processes) and disposal (landfill). Based on the WHP route proposed by the legislation and the
composition of the sludge generated by the ETP, it was found that due the low organic material
content, the most feasible solution is material recovery. Each alternative is analyzed quantitively and
qualitative in order to find the most sustainable route.</dc:description>
