   <dc:description>Anticoagulant drugs are essential treatments of cardiovascular diseases like myocardial infarction and stroke, but their effective use requires achieving a careful balance between suppressing pathological clotting (thrombosis) and compromising natural coagulation capabilities (hemostasis). Striking such a balance is difficult given the dynamic network of cellular and molecular reactions that take place in flowing blood. Embracing a systems pharmacology approach, computational and experimental models have been used to map the dynamic response of a novel class of Factor XI inhibitors, and explore their potential as anticoagulant medications with a wide risk/benefit margin.
