El punto de partida del presente trabajo es el interrogante —formulado en términos
de Bernhard Waldenfels— acerca de cómo es posible responder adecuadamente
a aquello que se nos presenta como extraño. A propósito de esta cuestión —
y siguiendo la inspiración del filósofo Maurice Merleau-Ponty y la del sociólogo Richard
Sennet— se subraya la importancia de aquellas disposiciones, previas al discurso
teórico, que configuran la percepción sensorial del otro. Dada la estrecha conexión
existente entre la insensibilidad sensorial —fomentada por el diseño urbanístico
de las grandes ciudades— y la indiferencia ética respecto al destino de los
otros, se concluye con Sennet que la experiencia del dolor o de la propia insuficiencia
es decisiva para la posibilidad de una cultura cívica entre miembros de culturas
extrañas.The basis of this paper is the question —as formulated by Bernhard Waldenfels—
how it is possible to answer adequately to what appears strange to us. As
regards this question —following in the footsteps of the philosopher Maurice Merleau-
Ponty and the sociologist Richard Sennet— we underline the importance of
remarking on the factors, before embarking on the theoretical discourse, that shape
the sensory perception of the other. Because of the close link that exists between
sensory insensibility –nurtured by the urban layout of the big cities— and the ethical
indifference in respect of the destiny of others, we conclude with Sennet that
the experience of pain or of one’s own insufficiency is decisive in making possible a
civic culture among the members of strange cultures.
