Además de ser un hombre de letras muy reconocido y de contribuir a la profesionalización de la historiografía española, Lafuente fue diputado hasta su muerte en 1866. Los capítulos dedicados a la transición de los Austrias a los Borbones, en los que se abordan temas como el reinado de Carlos II, la guerra de Sucesión o las reformas de Felipe V, pueden interpretarse como una lectura romántica, teleológica y presentista. En definitiva, su narración del pasado histórico contribuyó a formar una memoria oficial, y por tanto debe considerarse una pieza clave para la identidad del nuevo Estado- nación español.
