The paper considers the religious politics of José de la Serna, political leader and ec-clesiastical vice-patrono of Peru (1820-24), considering the reorganisation of bishoprics and their jurisdictions, relations with the ecclesiastical hierarchy, the extraordinary tax burdens imposed on ecclesiastical assets and revenues, the provision of curacies and reform of the regular clergy.
