The paper considers the religious politics of José de la Serna, political leader and ec-clesiastical vice-patrono of Peru (1820-24), considering the reorganisation of bishoprics and their jurisdictions, relations with the ecclesiastical hierarchy, the extraordinary tax burdens imposed on ecclesiastical assets and revenues, the provision of curacies and reform of the regular clergy. It looks at the ambivalent attitude towards the 1812 Constitution of the ec-clesiastical institution, which assumed either Liberal Catholicist or absolutist positions in favour of the alliance between throne and altar, subordination to the papacy and rejection of the independence movement which was associated with idolism
El objetivo de este artículo es abordar la política religiosa de José de la Serna, jefe po-lítico y vice-patrono del Perú (1820-1824), —reorganización de obispados y sus jurisdiccio-nes, relación con la jerarquía eclesiástica, cargas fiscales extraordinarias sobre bienes y rentas eclesiásticas, provisión de curatos, reforma de regulares— y la actitud ambivalente de la institución eclesiástica ante la Constitución de 1812, bien asumiendo cierto liberalismo católico o bien asumiendo posiciones absolutistas en pro de la alianza de Dios y el trono, la subordinación al papado y el rechazo al independentismo, al que se equiparó con la idolatría
