El nombre d’afectats en el món s’estima que es troba entre 1,3 i 2,5 milions de persones. A Catalunya els afectats per la malaltia són més de 6.500. Aquests números estan en creixement, ja que cada any tendeixen en augmentar el nombre de persones afectades. Les tècniques convencionals de ressonància magnètica són altament sensibles en la detecció de plaques d’EM i poden proporcionar valors quantitatius sobre les inflamacions i lesions.
