Tutor: Manuel Garín BoronatTreball de l'assignatura: Estètica del cinema contemporani, de primer trimestre del màster en Estudis de Cinema i Audiovisual Contemporanis. Curs 2016-2017Este trabajo busca reflexionar respecto a la posibilidad de hablar de una cierta estética del paracine,
es decir, de aquellas obras cinematográficas que se destacan por sus deficiencias formales y el
vínculo cultual que generan con su audiencia. La intención es repensar este término desde las
características formales de las obras que agrupa, y no a través de la relación con su audiencia.
Partiendo del término de Sconce y la estética del exceso que Calabrese identifica en los productos culturales neobarrocos, se buscará problematizar los alcances de esta terminología e identificar las cualidades formales de este tipo de películas, principalmente a través del análisis de The Room (Tommy Wiseau, 2003) y otras películas de cine z, para así poder establecer si es posible hablar de una estética del cine so bad it’s good.This essay studies the possibilities of defining a clear aesthetic of paracinema, namely of those films
that differentiate from others because of their formal deficiencies and the cult response they generate
in audiences. The goal is to rethink and study the phenomenon of paracinema not according to its
conditions of reception but of the formal qualities the movies grouped under this concept present.
With Sconce’s foundational text about paracinema and Omar Calabrese’s thoughts on the aesthetics
of excess as a starting point, these concepts and their reach will be problematized, with the intention
of identifying a series of formal qualities and characteristics that help define this kind of movies,
particularly through the study of Tommy Wiseau’s The Room (2003) and other Z movies, in order to
try to define a certain so bad it’s good film aesthetics.
